PADANG, kiprahkita.net - Recent hot weather in Padang has caused significant distress among farmers as their agricultural lands begin to dry out.
The Head of the Padang City Agriculture Office, Yoice Yuliani, has called on residents to conserve water usage.
"For farmers whose land is starting to dry out, begin conserving water immediately," Yoice advised during an interview on Sunday (28/7/2024).
In addition to conserving water, farmers are encouraged to optimize the use of irrigation systems, but without being wasteful. "Use water as needed," Yoice emphasized.
The use of water pumps is also recommended to help re-irrigate agricultural land.
Yoice noted that most of the rice fields in Padang had recently been harvested, meaning farmers will soon need water to prepare the soil.
"Apply a combination of chemical and organic fertilizers to keep the soil loose and prevent it from becoming hard," the Agriculture Office Head suggested.
"Additionally, return the straw to the fields instead of burning it, as straw helps restore soil fertility," Yoice added.
If the hot weather persists, Yoice advised farmers to consider planting alternative crops such as vegetables. "However, if there is still enough water, continue planting rice," she urged.
It is reported that the hot weather has affected Padang for the past two weeks, threatening 4,200 hectares of agricultural land with drought. (charlie/kominfo pdg)
