JAKARTA, kiprahkita.net - Starting June 1, 2025, Indonesian Driver's Licenses or Surat Izin Mengemudi (SIM) will be valid in eight ASEAN countries.
This means that Indonesian drivers will no longer need an International Driving Permit when traveling within Southeast Asia.
The ASEAN countries that recognize Indonesian SIM include the Philippines, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar, Brunei, Singapore, and Malaysia, as announced on the Instagram account @tmcpoldametro.
Dirregident Korlantas Polri Brigjen Pol Yusri Yunus explained that using the National Identity Number (NIK) as the SIM number is a significant step towards integrating various legal documents.
"The use of NIK as the SIM number marks a significant advancement in the integration of driving legality documents with other national documents such as NPWP, BPJS, and KTP," Yunus explained.
Additionally, the National Police Traffic Corps (Korlantas Polri) has announced changes to the appearance of the SIM to align with international standards.
"There will be images of cars or motorcycles next to the letters that classify the type of license. Furthermore, the SIM number will now be the identity card number, as we are using a single data system," said Brigjen Yusri Yunus.
Yusri stated that the changes are necessary because many countries do not understand the current format of Indonesian SIM when it comes to international usage. The use of an International Driving Permit must also be accompanied by the domestic SIM.
The new SIM format has been in effect since July 1, 2024, but Korlantas Polri is waiting for the current stock of old SIM materials to be used up.
"The new format will take effect after the current SIM materials are depleted because we have to account for the existing materials. So, the implementation timing depends on when the old materials run out," Yusri stated, as reported by infopublik.id on Sunday (July 21).***
