Lokovasia seeks to engage the younger generation in loving and developing traditional music.

With an innovative concept and diverse participant categories, Lokovasia is committed to strengthening cultural heritage through global cultural diplomacy.

Organized by the Directorate of Film, Music, and Media, under the Directorate General of Culture at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology or Kemendikbudristek, the new program will be held in the cool region of Batu, Malang Regency, East Java, in September 2024.

Ahmad Mahendra, the Director of Film, Music, and Media at Kemendikbudristek, stated that Lokovasia, held for the second time after its 2023 edition, aims to preserve the spirit and conserve Indonesian traditional music through conservation and innovation.

The program is designed to encourage the younger generation to love and develop various types of traditional Nusantara music.

Mahendra emphasized that Lokovasia, in collaboration with the Musike SJ Foundation, demonstrates the government's serious commitment to strengthening the preservation and development of traditional music as a form of global cultural diplomacy.

"The preservation and development of Indonesian traditional music must be expanded as a valuable cultural heritage," said Mahendra, as quoted from the Kemendikbudristek website.

Mahendra outlined four main concepts of traditional music to be implemented in Lokovasia: as a medium to stimulate the younger generation, a conservation movement, a space for interaction of ideas and creativity in creation, production, and archiving of works, and as a catalyst for traditional music works in both classical and contemporary formats through prestigious publications.

Mahendra also mentioned that Lokovasia 2024 needs to be well-packaged to be held in regions not yet familiar with traditional music. Denpasar, Bali, hosted Lokovasia 2023.

“Lokovasia must truly serve as a strategic platform to realize the mission of advancing the nation's culture,” Mahendra added.

Traditional musician Setyawan Jayantoro added that Lokovasia 2024 will feature four participant categories: music groups, composers, musicians, and music researchers.

“Lokovasia is designed as a vehicle to attract the interest, talent, and competence of the young Indonesian generation in the movement to preserve and develop traditional Nusantara music,” Setyawan stated.

In Lokovasia 2023, 350 individuals and groups registered as participants. After a rigorous selection process, 81 participants were chosen from across Indonesia, including 10 music groups, two composers, five musicians, and two music researchers.

Renowned names in the national music scene, such as Otto Sidharta and Dewa Alit, will serve as mentors for Lokovasia 2024.

Otto Sidharta, who also mentored at Lokovasia 2023 alongside I Nyoman Windha, Peni Candra Rini, Singgih Sanjaya, Dieter Mack, and Dwiki Darmawan, believes Lokovasia is crucial for raising awareness about preserving Indonesia's diverse traditional music.(Anton Setiawan/indonesia.go.id)
