Mount Marapi Erupts Twice Last Night

BUKITTINGGI, kiprahkita.net - After experiencing a significant decrease in activity over the past few weeks, especially since its status was downgraded from Alert Level III to Caution Level II, Mount Marapi erupted again on Saturday (27/7).

The Magma Indonesia website reported that at least two eruptions occurred, with tremors felt by several residents living around Marapi in Tanah Datar and Agam districts.

Some residents even reported seeing glowing lava at the summit crater of this iconic Minangkabau mountain.

Suwardi Putra from the Marapi Volcano Observation Post or PGA Marapi in Bukittinggi reported that the eruption occurred at 00:00 WIB, with an ash column observed reaching about 800 meters above the summit, or approximately 3,691 meters above sea level (asl).

"The ash column was observed to be brown with moderate intensity moving southeast. This eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 29.9 mm and a duration of 41 seconds," he said.

Another eruption occurred at 04:51 WIB, with the ash column height similar to the eruption at 00:00 WIB. The ash column was observed to be gray with moderate intensity moving southeast.

Throughout Thursday (26/7), the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) through the Magma Indonesia website reported several seismic activities.

There were two exhalation earthquakes, one deep volcanic earthquake, five local tectonic earthquakes, two distant tectonic earthquakes, and one continuous tremor.

With the status at Caution or Level II, PVMBG recommends:

1. Residents around Mount Marapi and visitors/tourists/climbers are not allowed to enter and conduct activities within a 3 km radius of the center of activity (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

2. Residents living around valleys/streams/rivers originating from the summit of Marapi should always be aware of the potential danger of lahars, especially during the rainy season.

3. To avoid respiratory (ISPA) and other health issues caused by volcanic ash, residents around Mount Marapi should use protective masks for the mouth and nose, and other equipment to protect the eyes and skin. Additionally, in case of ash rain, clean water facilities should be secured, and house roofs cleaned from thick volcanic ash to prevent collapse.

4. Residents around Mount Marapi and all parties should maintain a conducive atmosphere, refrain from spreading false narratives (hoaxes), and not be swayed by unclear sources. People should always follow the directions from the local government. (mus)
