LAMPUNG BARAT, kiprahkita.net - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), accompanied by the Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman, visited a coffee plantation in Kambahang Village, Batubrak District, West Lampung Regency, Lampung Province.
This visit is part of the government's ongoing efforts to strengthen support for Indonesian coffee as one of the best and largest coffee commodities in the world.
"We know that coffee prices are currently rising, despite occasional drops, but on a yearly basis, they continue to climb. Additionally, the volume of export demand is also increasing. This is why I emphasized to the Minister of Agriculture to pay close attention to the coffee commodity," the President said in Lampung on Friday (12/7/2023).
Currently, the price of coffee commodities is around 70,000 rupiah per kilogram in dry or green bean form, while the average productivity of coffee farmers is about 3 to 4 tons per hectare.
In this regard, the President wants farmers to continue increasing their production to reach 8 tons per hectare to improve their welfare.
"The most important thing is that productivity per hectare must increase. Those with 1 hectare (ha) producing 1 ton, 2 tons, should aim to reach 8 or 9 tons. But remember, this is our shared responsibility to drastically increase productivity per hectare," he said.
The President stated that the government has allocated subsidized fertilizers, doubling from 4.5 million to 9.5 million. This increase is expected to trigger production to meet the needs of both domestic and international markets.
Meanwhile, Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman added that the national coffee area in 2023 reached 1,268,905 hectares with an average production of 756,097 tons, making it the fourth largest in the world and contributing 6 percent of the world's coffee.
The Minister said Indonesia produces 91 percent Robusta coffee and 9 percent Arabica coffee, with export values rising by US$326,451 or 40 percent from US$821,932 to US$1,148,383 between 2020-2022, while export volumes increased by 58,201 tons or 15 percent from 379,354 tons to 437,555 tons.
Specifically for Lampung Province, Minister Amran added that it is currently the second-largest coffee producer in the country, with a plantation area of 155,165 hectares producing 108,069 tons, predominantly Robusta coffee.
"Interestingly, most coffee farmers in West Lampung apply grafting technology in Robusta coffee cultivation, resulting in productivity of 1.1 tons per hectare, which is above the national average productivity of 0.813 tons per hectare," he explained.(infopublik)
