Galanggang Arang #8 Opened in Padang Panjang

 


PADANG PANJANG, kiprahkita.net – Dozens of students and community members enthusiastically attended the Galanggang Arang #8 event held at Padang Panjang City Train Station on Tuesday, August 6, 2024.

Galanggang Arang was officially opened with the beating of the Gandang Tambua drum by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology through the Directorate of Cultural Development and Utilization (PPK), Directorate General of Culture, Irini Dewiwaanti, Acting Secretary of Padang Panjang City, Dr. Winarno, and Head of the Cultural Heritage Preservation Center Region III, Undri.

The event aims to remind the younger generation and the people of Padang Panjang about the Ombilin Coal Mining Heritage of Sawahlunto (WTBOS), which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2019.

Irini Dewiwaanti expressed her appreciation for the Galanggang Arang event, noting its role in educating the younger generation about WTBOS as a world heritage that must be well-maintained.

Padang Panjang is one of seven regions involved in this heritage, along with Sawahlunto City, Sijunjung Regency, Solok City, Solok Regency, Tanah Datar Regency, Padang Pariaman Regency, and Padang City.

"We thank the Padang Panjang City Government for showing their commitment to preserving WTBOS and actively participating in the success of the Galanggang Arang event," she said.

Irini hopes that the communities around the railway lines will help protect and preserve this world cultural heritage. She added that this event is beneficial and can advance global culture.

Winarno stated that Galanggang Arang is an initiative organized by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology through the Directorate of Cultural Development and Utilization (PPK), Directorate General of Culture. 

The event is held in collaboration with eight local governments in West Sumatra Province, namely Padang City, Padang Pariaman Regency, Padang Panjang City, Tanah Datar Regency, Solok Regency, Solok City, Sawahlunto City, and Sijunjung Regency. 

This initiative is supported by the Directorate General of Railways (DJKA), PT KAI, PT BA, and PT Pelindo.

Today, Padang Panjang hosts the second year of Galanggang Arang with the theme “Anak Nagari Caring for World Heritage.” 

The goal is to invite broader participation from all components of West Sumatra society to care for the properties and attributes of the WTBOS World Heritage in various ways.

"Joint efforts to care for WTBOS is an initiative to utilize it as a source of knowledge, public space, and a source of creating new cultural works," he said.

Meanwhile, Galanggang Arang Curator Dr. Dede Pramayoza said the event aims to reintroduce to the people of Padang Panjang that this is a world heritage recognized by UNESCO.

This year, Galanggang Arang features eight activities, including cultural dialogues, workshops, cultural film screenings, traditional children's games, communal feasts, explorations, discussions, and stage performances.

"We hope to continue promoting this event, and in the future, the culture in Padang Panjang will advance further," he said.

The event was attended by the head of PT KAI Regional Division II, Subdivision Head of the Railway Technical Center, Director of Belief in God Almighty and Indigenous Communities, and Chairman of the Ecosystem Strengthening Task Force.

Also, local government officials (Forkopimda), Nagari Traditional Council (KAN) members, traditional leaders (Niniak Mamak), community leaders (Bundo Kanduang), Acting PKK Chairperson, Acting Chairperson of Dharma Wanita Persatuan, and other invited guests. (kominfo pdp)
