MEDAN, kiprahkita.net - Riau Province's contingent of athletes is currently leading the medal tally at PON XXI Aceh-Sumut, having secured a total of 4 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze medals.

This success has been largely dominated by the gymnastics events, which have contributed 5 out of the 8 medals won so far.

Riau's gymnastics coach, Markos, explained that in addition to winning 2 gold medals, the Riau gymnasts also brought home 1 silver and 2 bronze medals. The silver medal was won by Afrizal in the rings event, while the bronze medals were secured by Afrizal in the pommel horse event and Puja in the vault event.

"Thanks to the hard work and unity of all the athletes and officials, we have achieved these results. The medals we have won are a testament to our commitment to the Riau contingent. Today, we added 2 gold medals, 1 silver, and 2 bronze," Markos said in a press statement on Friday (30/8/2024).

Markos also mentioned that there is still a strong chance of adding more gold medals, with four Riau athletes set to compete on the final day of the gymnastics events in the artistic apparatus category.

"We ask for the prayers of the Riau community for the success of our gymnasts competing tomorrow. There are three more apparatus events, and we are optimistic that we can win gold with Abiyu in the horizontal bar, Agung in the parallel bars, and Afrizal in the vault. With God's permission, we hope to achieve our target of 7 gold medals," Markos added.

Iskandar Hoesin, the Chairman of the Riau National Sports Committee (KONI), who has been closely accompanying the athletes in Medan, expressed his deep emotion and pride over the outstanding performance of Riau's gymnasts.

He extended his highest appreciation to the athletes and coaches who have exceeded the gold medal target.

"I am deeply moved and proud. Our gymnasts have added two more gold medals for the Riau contingent. The initial target was three golds, but we have already surpassed that target. They will compete again tomorrow, and hopefully, we can add more gold medals," said Iskandar Hoesin.(infopublik.id)
