PADANG, kiprahkita.net - There will be something different in this year’s commemoration of the September 30, 2009 earthquake.
In addition to remembering the victims, the Padang City Government will hold several activities as part of the City’s Disaster Preparedness Day (HKB).
This was announced by Acting Mayor of Padang, Andree Algamar, during a preparatory meeting for HKB Padang at the Abu Bakar Jaar Hall, City Hall, Aie Pacah, on Friday (September 13).
“This year, we will once again commemorate the earthquake that happened 15 years ago. We aim to create a different atmosphere from previous years. We will invite the Head of BNPB, hold a seminar and competitions, and involve students across Padang City,” he stated.
The goal of using the momentum of the September 30 earthquake is to educate the public, especially the younger generation in Padang, about disaster awareness and the importance of preparedness for various potential disasters.
"Through this earthquake commemoration, we want to draw lessons from the tragedy that happened 15 years ago. We want all parties to remain vigilant and prepared to respond intelligently to any disaster," added Algamar.
As widely known, on September 30, 2009, West Sumatra was struck by a 7.6-magnitude earthquake.
Padang City was one of the hardest-hit areas. The earthquake devastated thousands of homes, infrastructure, government buildings, and claimed hundreds of lives.
The tragedy left a deep scar on the people of Padang, prompting the city government to hold an annual event on September 30 to remember the disaster.
The HKB preparatory meeting was attended by the Assistant for Government and Welfare, Edi Hasymi, Head of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Hendri Zulviton, heads of regional departments, sub-district heads, and disaster response representatives from Padang City. (kominfopdg)
