PADANG, kiprahkita.net - To tackle the waste issue in Padang City, Acting Mayor (Pj) Andree Algamar has urged residents to intensify the "Stop Food Waste" campaign.
He emphasized this during a Special Dialogue with Padang FM on Tuesday, September 2, 2024.
Padang City, he noted, produces up to 660 tons of waste daily. The Padang City Government currently manages to handle about 78 percent of this waste. A significant portion of the waste is composed of food scraps.
"This is what we need to prepare for the people of Padang in the future. We need to change the lifestyle and behavior of the community to ensure that food is consumed in proper portions and that nothing is wasted," Andree stated.
He also highlighted that the Padang City Government is actively promoting organic waste recycling programs. One of these initiatives includes maggot cultivation, which has economic value.
In addition to maximizing organic waste management, the city is also optimizing the handling of inorganic waste.
Andree mentioned that around 100 tons of waste are currently being extracted and sorted at the city's waste banks.
"Especially during the 'Padang Bagoro' cleanup events, people will find waste that can be sorted. Therefore, we need to further educate the entire community about waste banks. We are striving for one waste bank in every RW (neighborhood unit)," he added.
Andree stressed the importance of enhancing the role of Waste Management Institutions (LPS) at the village and sub-district levels to ensure sustainable waste management.
"Plans are also underway for waste processing at the Aia Dingin landfill. We expect to receive a grant for a Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) Integrated Waste Processing Facility (TPST) in February, which will help extend the lifespan of the landfill, which is nearing its maximum capacity," Andree concluded.(kominfopdg)
