PADANG, kiptahkita.net – Students of Khaira Ummah Islamic Kindergarten in Koto Panjang Ikur Koto, Koto Tangah District, were seen panicking and rushing out of their classrooms with fear and anxiety when the sirens sounded.
The children immediately took cover under the tables, following procedures to protect themselves from the threat of a natural disaster. Afterward, they ran to the designated assembly point.
This event was part of a disaster preparedness simulation, focusing on the potential threat of the Megathrust Mentawai earthquake and strengthening disaster readiness in the Padang area.
The simulation aimed to improve the readiness of both students and the surrounding community to handle emergency situations.
Secretary of Padang’s Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Robert Candra Eka Putra, explained that the Megathrust issue is not new and has been a long-standing concern.
"Historically, Padang has experienced earthquakes. This serves as a reminder for all of us to always be prepared and assess our readiness when a disaster occurs," said Robert.
He further added that following the major earthquake in 2009, the Megathrust issue has gained more attention, especially with advancements in technology. According to him, this has heightened public awareness but also led to panic.
"Megathrust should be considered vital information that encourages us to be better prepared for disasters. Simulations like this are crucial preventive measures," he said.
Robert also highlighted the natural signs of an impending tsunami, such as a powerful earthquake lasting more than 30 seconds, falling trees, collapsing buildings, or unusual behavior from birds and pets.
"If an earthquake occurs, protect yourself from falling objects using a bag or your hands, and take cover under a sturdy object like a chair or table. After that, immediately head to the assembly point and move eastward," he explained.
Robert also mentioned that Padang has 25 tsunami blue line markers, which indicate safe evacuation areas in case of a disaster.
He emphasized the importance of collective efforts in disaster preparedness, particularly in educational institutions, which should have clear Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for disaster readiness.
"Everyone must actively participate, especially within the education sector, to ensure greater preparedness for emergencies," he concluded. (kiprahkita)
