TOBA, kiprahkita.net - The ongoing rainy season has led to frequent flooding in the city of Balige.
In response, the Toba Regency Government conducted a communal effort to clean several drains in the city center, focusing on Jalan Gereja, Jalan Raja Paindoan, and Jalan Patuan Nagari on Tuesday (September 17, 2024).
“This cleaning is something we do regularly. However, since it’s currently the rainy season, we’ve decided to carry out additional cleaning,” said Sofian Sitorus, Acting Head of the Public Works and Public Housing Agency (PUPR) of Toba Regency, when interviewed at the cleaning site.
During the cleaning process, workers had to enter the drains to remove the large amounts of accumulated waste.
The waste included plastics, iron, wood, and other debris. To support the cleaning effort, the Toba Regency Government deployed a bucket excavator and a fire truck to help clear the blocked drains.
In addition to household waste, sand had also built up in the drains. “We hope this will help minimize flooding during heavy rains,” Sofian added.
He also expressed hope that the public would become more aware of the importance of cleanliness and stop littering, to prevent future floods. (mctoba)
