Tracing the Historical Footprints of Padang

PADANG, kiprahkita.net - As the capital of West Sumatra Province, Padang is a city rich with history and stories from its past.

From colonial times to the national independence movement, Padang offers numerous sites that reflect its long historical journey.

These remnants of the past can still be seen throughout the city, making Padang a fascinating destination for those interested in exploring its historical and cultural heritage.

One of the ways to uncover this history is through its archives and documents.

The Static Archives Gallery (Galeri Arsip Statis) of Padang is now located in a new building at the old City Hall on Jalan M. Yamin, Kampung Jao, West Padang District, West Sumatra.

The gallery was previously situated on Jalan Sudirman in the former building of SMA 1 Padang.

The relocation process to the new site has been done in phases, coinciding with Padang’s 355th anniversary.

Restu Pramona, a junior archivist from the Padang City Library and Archives Office, explained that the relocation of the gallery to its new home is still underway, with adjustments and organizing efforts continuing.

"In this modern era, the Static Archives Gallery not only serves visitors in person but also provides online access. Although social media campaigns have been carried out, many people are still unaware of its new location. We hope that with this move, we can attract more visitors and encourage the public to learn about Padang's history," Restu said during an interview at the gallery on Thursday (3/10/2024).

Restu further highlighted that moving the gallery to the old City Hall, a historical building, would enhance its authenticity and historical atmosphere.

"When visitors come here, two things will remind them of important historical moments. First, the location itself, which used to be the center of the Dutch East Indies government, and second, the historical moments captured within the gallery, including photographs and other documents," he added.

With support from both the government and the community, the Static Archives Gallery is expected to become an educational and inspiring space for the younger generation.

"The gallery is not just a storage place for documents but also a testament to our history, helping to foster appreciation for the cultural heritage of Padang," Restu explained.

The gallery has also embraced digital technology in its preservation efforts.

"We have implemented the digitization of our archives, allowing visitors to scan barcodes and access detailed information about the historical photographs on display. Our collections include photographs, documents, maps, old newspapers, and even videos from the colonial era," Restu elaborated.

Tifan Perdana, who is in charge of the Static Archives Gallery, shared further details about the facilities, which include a static archive depot, a restoration room, a digitization room, and a mini studio.

Visitors can also access archives digitally through JIKN.go.id. "The Static Archives Gallery showcases Padang's history from colonialism to post-independence, presenting well-documented historical evidence," Tifan said.

Tifan emphasized the importance of preserving historical records as a foundation for understanding the past and building the future.

"Without evidence, history remains just a story. But with documented proof, these become important moments that form part of our written history," he said.

Visitors can immerse themselves in the history of Padang at the gallery, located on the second floor of the old City Hall.

The relocation of the gallery aims to improve accessibility and visitor comfort, while also raising public interest in Padang's rich history.(kominfopdg)
