Maumere Airport Resumes Operations

MAUMERE, kiprahkita.net - Fransiskus Xaverius Seda Airport in Maumere has officially reopened and resumed operations, serving travelers utilizing air transportation services.

The airport had been temporarily closed since July 17, 2024, following the eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, due to aviation safety concerns.

The reopening was marked by the issuance of a NOTAM Aerodrome Normal Operation by the NOTAM Office, numbered C1979/24 NOTAMC C1978/24, effective December 1, 2024, at 3:43 PM WITA.

“Based on the evaluation of ASHTAM information, SIGMET reports, and volcanic ash dispersion maps, it has been determined that the airspace over the airport has been free from volcanic ash since December 1, 2024,” said Partahian Panjaitan, Head of the Class II Airport Operations Unit of Fransiskus Xaverius Seda Airport, as quoted by InfoPublik on Wednesday (December 4, 2024).

The evaluation results were further corroborated by data from the Fransiskus Xaverius Seda Meteorological Station, indicating dominant wind movements from the west to the north in Sikka Regency for the period of December 2-6, 2024.

With this favorable condition, airlines Wings Air and Nam Air have resumed ticket sales for flights scheduled to start on December 16, 2024. These airlines had previously halted operations on July 17, 2024, due to the hazardous volcanic ash in the airspace.

"The reopening of Fransiskus Xaverius Seda Airport is a wonderful gift ahead of Christmas, allowing our community members traveling to and from Maumere and its surrounding areas to reunite with their families," said Partahian Panjaitan.

The flight schedules include Wings Air routes for Maumere-Kupang and Labuan Bajo-Maumere round trips, while Nam Air offers Kupang-Maumere round trips.

Partahian also emphasized that the airport authority will continue to coordinate with the Meteorological Station, Airnav Indonesia, and airlines to monitor the ongoing impact of the Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki eruption.

“Safety is our top priority in aviation. We will maintain close coordination with relevant stakeholders to ensure safe, secure, and comfortable flights,” he concluded.(infopublik/hubud)
