TANAH DATAR, kiprahkita.net – Tanah Datar Regent Eka Putra has issued a call to the community to participate in efforts to prevent and control rabies in Tanah Datar Regency.

This appeal is outlined in Circular Number 1148 of 2024 concerning Rabies Control, which was issued on Friday (12/20/2024).

"Based on Tanah Datar Regency Regulation Number 03 of 2016 on Rabies Control, several important points need to be conveyed," stated Regent Eka Putra in the circular.

In the first point, the Regent explained that rabies is a disease caused by the rabies virus, which can infect warm-blooded animals and humans.

This disease is zoonotic, meaning it can be transmitted from animals to humans through bites from rabies-carrying animals (HPR) such as dogs, cats, monkeys, or bats.

The Regent emphasized that HPR owners must properly care for and be responsible for their pets' health.

"HPR owners are prohibited from abandoning or neglecting their pets. Dogs and monkeys should not be allowed to roam outside the home compound. If taken outside, pets must be leashed with a maximum length of two meters," said Eka Putra.

To prevent rabies, the Regent recommended that the community vaccinate their pets, including dogs, cats, and monkeys, at Animal Health Centers (Puskeswan) or through veterinarians.

"Rabies control requires active community participation. If a bite occurs, immediately wash the wound with soap and running water for 10 to 15 minutes, and take the victim to the nearest health center or hospital for further treatment," he added.

The Regent also requested that incidents of animal bites be reported promptly to the Department of Agriculture so that a certificate of HPR bite can be issued for medical handling by the Department of Health.

Previously, Head of the Tanah Datar Agriculture Department, Sri Mulyani, revealed that rabies-related animal bite cases in Tanah Datar Regency have shown an increasing trend from 2020 to 2023.

This has become a serious concern for the local government to raise public awareness about rabies control.

Through this appeal, Regent Eka Putra hopes that the community will become more aware and proactive in maintaining health and safety in their environment against the threat of rabies. (*)
