Corn: A Potential Commodity in Tanah Datar

TANAH DATAR, kiprahkita.net - The Tanah Datar Regency Government continues to enhance food self-sufficiency, with corn production serving as a key indicator of success.

To ensure adequate corn supplies, Regent Eka Putra inaugurated the first corn harvest of 2025 in Jorong Guguak Baruah, Nagari Padang Magek, Rambatan District, on Saturday (January 4, 2025).

This initiative was spearheaded by the Pulai Sakato millennial farmer group.

“Today, the Tanah Datar Regency Government is marking its first major corn harvest. Corn is one of the essential indicators of food self-sufficiency. I sincerely hope that in 2025, we will see more millennial farmers, especially from younger generations like Gen Z, contributing to the government’s food security program,” said Regent Eka Putra.

The Regent emphasized that the demand for corn in Tanah Datar is high, particularly as feed for approximately three million broiler and layer chickens raised in the region.

In Tanah Datar, he added, we have about three million chickens that require substantial feed, including corn. It all comes down to our willingness, especially from Gen Z, to step up.

"I am proud to meet with millennial farmer groups, and I hope this serves as inspiration for others. The regional government will fully support this program,” he said.

Regent Eka also urged relevant departments to consistently assist millennial farmers in the future.

“Provide guidance from land preparation to harvest, including through programs like free plowing services. Let’s utilize unused land for farming,” he encouraged.

At the event’s conclusion, the Regent expressed gratitude to the Military District Command, the Police Chief, and other local government officials for supporting the farmers and advancing the food security program.

Meanwhile, Padang Magek Village Head Safril Jamal thanked the regional government for its strong support of millennial farmers, particularly corn and rice growers in Rambatan.

“Thank you, Regent Eka. Alhamdulillah, the people of Padang Magek have proven the success of your flagship agricultural program through this inaugural corn harvest in early 2025," he said.

The harvest, Syafril continued, conducted on about two hectares of farmland managed by the Pulai millennial farmer group in Jorong Guguak Baruah, contributes significantly to food self-sufficiency and improves the community’s economy.

Safril also highlighted the need for better access roads to agricultural land and local schools, specifically the middle school in Jorong Guguak Baruah.

“We need a 900-meter-long, 4-meter-wide road—classified as a district road—to be paved. This route will prevent morning traffic jams on the provincial road used by students, especially those attending junior and senior high schools in Rambatan. Improved access will ensure smoother operations for both farmers and students,” he explained.

Millennial farmer group leader Rafi expressed his gratitude for the government’s support and called for continued assistance in optimizing agricultural land productivity.

“Thank you, Regent Eka, for your support. Going forward, we need help from relevant departments for guidance, seed distribution, and post-harvest marketing,” said Rafi.(prokopimtnd)
